Agility is a great sport, with the dog running through tunnels, jumping over jumps of various kinds, and climbing obstacles, all against the clock. It takes quite a bit of training to be competitive and win. However, agility can also be a fun sport just to do, even if you have no desire to compete. Many trainers incorporate agility into their training programs as confidence builders for puppies.

To compete, the dog must be in great physical condition; an out of shape dog will be slow and prone to injury. Dogs perform off leash, so they need a good foundation in obedience. Owners must also be in shape (some running is involved), and dog and owner must work well together as a team.

If you decide to compete, there are several organizations that offer competitions and titles. The AKC, UKC, Australian Shepherd Club of America, and United States Dog Agility Association are the most popular.
