Gastric torsion (also called bloat) is more common in giant and large breeds with a deep chest, although just about any dog can experience bloat. The first symptom of bloat is discomfort; the dog usually paces back and forth and can't settle down. He may salivate and gag but not throw up. The abdomen will eventually become distended and hard.

If you suspect bloat, call the vet right away. With quick treatment, most dogs survive. Without treatment, the stomach can turn (torsion), and the dog will go into shock and die.
