Canine Good Citizen

The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program was introduced by the AKC in an effort to promote and reward responsible dog ownership and, at the same time, to get well-behaved dogs some positive media attention. After all, too many times the only media attention dogs get is negative because something awful has happened. Since its introduction, many therapy dog programs have adopted the CGC test as a standard for evaluating new members.

To earn a CGC, the dog must pass a number of exercises, including sitting nicely when greeted by a friendly person, walking nicely on a leash, and demonstrating that he knows the Sit, Down, and Stay. For a list of all the CGC exercises and to find a trainer in your area who offers the CGC tests, go to the AKC's website, www.akc.org.
