Obedience Trials

Many registries, including the AKC, UKC, and CKC, sponsor dog obedience trials. Dogs and their owners can compete at a variety of classes (levels), from novice through utility and on, to earn obedience titles and championships. In each class, dog and owner must perform a number of different exercises. For example, in the AKC's Novice class, the dog must Heel on leash and off leash, allow the judge to touch him in a Stand for exam, Come when called across the ring, and do a timed Sit-Stay and Down-Stay. When a dog and owner successfully compete at the Novice level according to the AKC's competition guidelines, the dog is awarded the title "Companion Dog." As the dog continues to compete, he can earn additional titles and even Obedience Trial Champion. The best obedience competition dogs have a strong desire to please, cooperate with training, and want to work with you.

The guidelines and competition rules for obedience are quite specific and require training prior to entering a trial. As with the conformation competition, go to the AKC, UKC, or CKC website and read through the obedience competition rules. You may also want to find a trainer in your area who specializes in competition training to assist you.
