Shock

Dogs, like people, can go into shock after an injury. Shock is life-threatening by itself; when combined with the initial injury, it is extremely serious.

The symptoms of shock include:

♦ Faster than normal, often irregular heartbeat.

♦ Rapid breathing, panting, or even gasping for air.

♦ A staring look in the eyes with no recognition of you; eyes dilated, or even no eye response to movement.

The only treatment you can provide a dog in shock is to keep him warm and get him to the veterinarian right away. Never assume that a dog will recover from shock on his own.
