The Surefire Way to Get your Adult Dog Used to Her Crate

Sometimes an adult dog that has never been crate trained won't want to go in her crate. First, follow the method described in the section "Crate Training Step-by-Step" (p. 23).

If your adult dog still doesn't want to go in, start feeding her in her crate. When it's time to feed your dog, with her bowl in your hand, tell her "go in your crate" and put the bowl at the far end of the crate. Do this for a week and I promise you that in no time all you'll have to say is "go in your crate" and she will be running there.

For me, this has become a permanent routine. I also consider this an excellent opportunity to practice my dogs' sit-stay and down-stay.
