A tie-down is simply a 3 or 4-foot leash that you attach to a heavy piece of furniture. It is very important, when you hook your puppy to the leash, that she wears a buckle collar and that you give her a chew toy to keep her occupied.
Depending on the size of your puppy, you must adjust the length of the leash. Your puppy should be able to sit, stand, lie down and stretch while she's hooked to the tie-down. Don't let her too much leeway or she could decide to do her business at the end of the leash and come back to her post to continue playing.
One last thing, NEVER tie-down your dog if you're not around to supervise her. It is extremely dangerous. Her legs can become entangled in the leash and she could even hang herself. Believe me, a crate is far more safer.
