Jack Russell With Narrow Ear Canals Shaking Head

The ears on the Jack Russell fold over, which, in theory, is to help keep dirt out of the inner ear when the dogs are below ground. If you see your dog shaking her head or scratching her ears, or if there is an unpleasant odor, dirt might be embedded in the ear, there may be an infection, or ear mites could be present. Your veterinarian can give you a diagnosis.

If the problem is ear mites, the vet will prescribe drops to eliminate them. Mites are highly contagious and all pets in the home should be checked and treated.

Inspect your dog's ears weekly to keep ahead of any problems that may arise. You may want to use a liquid ear cleansing product. Clean the ears with a cotton swab, but never go farther into the ear canal than you can see.
