Spaying and Neutering

Neutering or spaying is the kindest thing you can do for your dog. Life with a dog is much easier for you, too, if you do not have to be concerned with the problems associated with the female's heat cycles or the male's compulsion to

Why Spay and Neuter?

Breeding dogs is a serious undertaking that should only be part of a well-planned breeding program. Why? Because dogs pass on their physical and behavioral problems to their offspring. Even healthy, well-behaved dogs can pass on problems in their genes.

Is your dog so sweet that you'd like to have a litter of puppies just like her? If you breed her to another dog, the pups will not have the same genetic heritage she has. Breeding her parents again will increase the odds of a similar pup, but even then, the puppies in the second litter could inherit different genes. In fact, there is no way to breed a dog to be just like another dog.

Meanwhile, thousands and thousands of dogs are killed in animal shelters every year simply because they have no homes. Casual breeding is a big contributor to this problem.

If you don't plan to breed your dog, is it still a good idea to spay her or neuter him? Yes!

When you spay your female:

• You avoid her heat cycles, during which she discharges blood and scent.

• It greatly reduces the risk of mammary cancer and eliminates the risk of pyometra (an often fatal infection of the uterus) and uterine cancer.

• It prevents unwanted pregnancies.

• It reduces dominance behaviors and aggression.

When you neuter your male:

• It curbs the desire to roam and to fight with other males.

• It greatly reduces the risk of prostate cancer and eliminates the risk of testicular cancer.

• It helps reduce leg lifting and mounting behavior.

• It reduces dominance behaviors and aggression.

seek a female in season. You won't have the surprise of puppies that you had not planned for and the risk that the sire (father) of the puppies is another breed entirely. And you won't be adding unwanted puppies to the already staggering pet population.

The health benefits of spaying your female by 6 months of age are outlined in the box on page 95. Spaying also eliminates the mess associated with seasonal bleeding and the problems involved with having to isolate your bitch for three to four weeks, twice a year, to keep her away from unneutered males. The female in heat has a strong desire to get to a male, and her scent will attract males from far and wide. A bitch in season cannot be allowed out of your sight for even a moment. Keeping her in a kennel run or wire crate is no guarantee that a male will not get to her. A dog can be very secretive and not show any indication of heat until she is mated by a male dog. You are best armed against such an event by spaying.

Spayed and neutered animals will not become fat and lazy unless you let them. About the time when spaying and neutering can be done, the dog is near-ing maturity and needs an adjustment in the type and amount of food being

served anyway. By keeping the diet appropriate to age and activity level, your dog will not get fat.

The only appropriate reason for keeping intact males or females is for breeding purposes, and animals kept for that purpose should be especially fine examples of the breed and qualify for registration with the JRTCA prior to breeding. They should be outstanding in quality, performance, and temperament, free from any known genetic defects, and possess the working instincts that have kept this dog what she is for so many years. Breeding known successful hunters is also suggested to keep the strong desire to hunt in the breed for the future.
