When does your dog chew? When you're at home but busy? Keep your dog with you using the Teaching Lead methodology (see page 38) and start lessons to help create an internal sense of organization and control.

Does your dog chew in front of you or out of sight? Is it happening when you're out of the house? You'll need to increase your dog's isolation in a small room, fold-out pen, or crate (left with some favorite chews) in order to teach him how to relax and to give him a proper displacement activity. Crating or securing your dog when you can't watch him does more than prevent the problem—it helps your dog learn how to be still by himself. A well-chosen bone or chew toy serves as a good displacement object.
