Signal with the right hand and say Down at the same time lightly pushing against his chest with your left hand See Figure

If necessary, apply a little downward pressure on his collar. (You can use either arm. For the sake of simplicity, we assume it's the right.)

The purpose of the pressure against his chest is to prevent Buddy from moving his feet forward as he drops — the natural tendency for most dogs. You want to teach him to collapse in place because that's what the Obedience Regulations require. Look at his feet as you drop him. With pressure against his chest, they don't move forward.

The downward pressure on the collar reinforces the drop. Be careful that you don't inadvertently pull him toward you because that would make him move his feet forward. Practice until he lies down in place without any pressure on his collar — and with the signal only.
