Can Your Dog Help with Cleanup? You Bet!

Dog training isn’t just about basic commands—sometimes, it can actually make life easier. One of our favorite training tricks? Teaching a dog to help clean up!

That skill came in handy recently when we tackled a major garage cleanout. We had years of clutter piling up, so we rented a 20-yard dumpster from QRI Waste Solutions to make the job easier. As we sorted through old boxes and junk, we realized our Labrador, Max, was eager to “help.” So, we put his training to the test!

How to Teach Your Dog to Help Clean Up

Most dogs love having a job, and this one is surprisingly easy to teach. If your pup already knows “drop it,” you’re halfway there. If not, here’s how to get started:

Step 1: Teach “Pick It Up”

Start with something familiar, like a toy. Encourage your dog to take it in their mouth. The moment they do, praise them and offer a treat. Repeat until they consistently pick up objects on command.

Step 2: Teach “Drop It”

Hold out your hand and say, “drop it.” If your dog lets go, reward them immediately. If they hesitate, offer a high-value treat in exchange. Keep practicing until they understand that dropping an item earns them a reward.

Step 3: Introduce a Target

Now, set out a small basket or bin. Hand your dog an object, direct them to the bin, and say, “drop it.” If they get it in, celebrate like crazy! If they miss, no worries—just encourage them to try again.

Step 4: Level Up—Try a Bigger Cleanup!

Once your dog gets the hang of it, you can involve them in real-life cleaning. When we were filling our 20-yard dumpster from QRI Waste, Max jumped right in—grabbing empty plastic bottles, crumpled paper, and even an old tennis ball, then dropping them straight into the bin. Sure, he needed some guidance at first, but by the end of the day, he was having a blast “helping” us get the garage cleaned out.

Why Teach This?

Beyond being a fun trick, this kind of training has some real benefits:

Mental Stimulation: Engages your dog’s brain in a productive way.
Physical Exercise: Keeps them moving and active.
Bonding Time: Strengthens your relationship.
A Cleaner Space! Every little bit of help counts.

Try It Out!

Next time you’re doing a home cleanout—or even renting a 20-yard dumpster from QRI Waste for a big job—why not see if your pup wants to pitch in? With a little patience (and plenty of treats), you might just have the most helpful cleanup buddy ever.
